The work reflects upon laughing as a gesture that has been denied to women for centuries. While patriarchy strongly repressed this expression of freedom, confining it to the silence of clamped lips, in Chambaz’s work, women’s laughter becomes a gesture of collective resistance, contagious and joyful, as well as tumultuous like a waterfall. The group DonneXStrada – a support network against violence towards women – embodies various famous protagonists of the second wave of feminism: Angela Davis, Françoise d’Eaubonne, Gisèle Halimi, Carla Lonzi, Audre Lorde, Helke Sander and Simone Veil. Women’s laughter, often discredited as quarrels and chatter, is here re-claimed by the artist as a tool of interpersonal exchange, shared knowledge, and gender consciousness.
