Screening of Frente a Guernica (Director’s Cut)
by Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi
Opening, meeting with Yervant Gianikian in dialogue with Piero Colussi.
Yervan Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi, visual artists dedicated to film experimentation since the late 1970s, have presented their works at the world’s most important festivals and major art venues, from the Venice Biennale to the Centre Pompidou and the MoMA in New York. Re-elaborating archive material, never seen in nostalgic terms but as a tool for understanding the contemporary world, they deal with themes such as colonialism, conflict, exploration, turning a special eye to the excluded and the gestures that affect them. On Wednesday 30 October 2024, Altreforme in collaboration with Cinemazero will present the latest work in this research, Frente a Guernica (Director’s Cut) (2023), presented at the Venice Film Festival in 2023, at the Jeonju International Film Festival and at Doclisboa, and later in 2024 at the Cinémathèque française in Paris, at the Fondazione Prada in Milan and awarded at the Festival Mille Occhi in Trieste.
The idea for this film, a ten-year production project on the Spanish Civil War and the episodes in European history that contributed to the outbreak of that conflict, arose from the authors’ close encounter with Picasso’s Guernica at the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, which commissioned Gianikian’s work in order to acquire it for its permanent collection.
The event is part of the Mind The Border project (in connection with the broader Mind The Gap project) produced by Altreforme, and financed by the FVG Region, Io Sono Friuli Venezia Giulia, in collaboration with Casa Netural, Associazione ETRARTE, Agorè, Young for Fun, Cinemazero, Visionario, Kinemax and University of Nova Gorica School of Arts.
