Talk with the artist Caterina Erica Shanta and Viviana Carlet, General Director of Lago Film Fest

Cinema Visionario, Udine

Altreforme, as part of the eighth edition of Mind The Gap, presents an evening at the cinema dedicated to a reflection on the ways in which we construct and interpret representations of the world around us. The event features screenings of the film Talking About Visibility by Caterina Erica Shanta and the short film The Archive: Queer Nigerians by Simisolaoluwa Akande, which was selected as part of the Princìpî Award competition: tomorrow’s film talents by Lago Film Fest XX.

Talking About Visibility is the fruit of a collective film workshop held in Turin, a city symbolic of Italian national history. Here, the artist collaborated with refugees and people with a migrant past to weave personal and cinematic memories into a shared narrative. Through memories of beloved films from childhood, the work explores the dialogue between individual memories and collective imaginaries, interrogating the ways in which we construct our histories and the relationships between places and communities.

The short film The Archive: Queer Nigerians (2023), directed by Simisolaoluwa Akande, is a poignant exploration of queer identities in Nigeria. The filmmaker transforms herself into a primal storyteller, interweaving film and digital archive to unearth the queer origins of Nigerian culture. With a delicate balance between fragility and resilience, the film offers an intimate look at sexuality and a sense of belonging, delivering to the viewer a tale rich in authenticity and reflection.

During the event, artist Caterina Erica Shanta and Viviana Carlet, founder and General Director of Lago Film Fest and Piattaforma Lago, will be present for a discussion on the role of images in the construction of identity and otherness. The dialogue will be an opportunity to reflect on the main theme of this edition: “How do you construct images of the other?”

A moment of encounter between art, cinema and critical thinking, open to the public and fans of contemporary culture.

Admission is free while places last.

The meeting is part of the public program of the exhibition How do you construct images of the other?, produced by Altreforme in collaboration with the City of Udine and open at Casa Cavazzini until March 16, 2025.
