BIOGRAPHY

Stefan Kruse (Esbjerg, Denmark, 1987) is a visual artist and filmmaker. His research explores modalities of vision, exploring the details of how images–by means of techniques and narratives– are produced, inserted in given regimes of visibility and used to adhere to patterns of control. His works have been presented at various festivals, including Visions Du Réel, Nyon; Courtisane, Brussels; 25FPS, Zagreb; Festival de Cine, Madrid; and Festival Dei Popoli, Florence. In January 2024 Kruse published his first artist’s book, A Lack of Clarity, with publisher Buchhandlung Walther König. He studied graphic design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and has recently completed a postgraduate course at Kunsthochschule für Medien in Cologne.

HD Video, color, sound

In the form of a hybrid documentary, this work unconventionally explores the narratives of the so-called “migratory crisis” that took over Europe in 2015. Moving from the technical modalities used to build media representations of migrants, the artist decides not to reflect upon the crisis per se, but rather on the production of the images around it. Who produced those images and for whom? Who manipulated them? Who spread them? Did they alter our perception of the migratory phenomenon? Do other, different images exist, beyond those we observe in official media? Through seven chapters corresponding to as many producers of images – ranging from a single individual to government entities – Kruse Jørgensen’s work addresses these questions and guides us through the multitude of representations that, by circulating indefinitely, have often lost any reference to their original context.
